Main idea: Why have some cultures advanced and some have not?
Main Characters:
Jared Diamond- Author, Professor at UCLA, biologist, human specialist, loves watching/ learning about birds
Yali- lives in Papua New Guinea, asked Diamond, "Why you white men have so much Cargo and we New Guineans don't". Got Dimond to start wondering why some cultures advanced faster then others.
Kite- Co Director of the dig in Draa and works with a group of archeologists

Middle East- around 13000 years ago, first civilization and advanced technology started
Draa- First known advanced civilization in the Middle East, held 40-50 people, oval huts, created worlds first granary, first known record of people growing their own food.
What was Jared Diamond set out to find?
Diamond believed that if he could understand why some cultures have advanced and other have not.
He thought about all the major empires/cities like the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. the all had advanced technology of the time, large populations, and well organized work forces. He tracked as far back as the middle east to find more answers of why those groups were able to organize/ use those techiques as tools. He talked to Co Director of the dig in Draa and found out people made their own holmes, technology, and learned how to grow and store food. The major food their was what and Barley. Diamond also thought about intellects. He followed the people of Guinea as they built their own shelters, hunted pray, and cut down trees and collect their own food. He knew that Intelligence could not be the issue, after all those all take strategies and brain power. Jared still needed more answers.
